If You Have Always Wanted To Learn Act At The Highest Artistic Level Then This Could Be For You…
(As long as you are deadly serious about acting!)
Friday April 29th – Sunday 1st May, 2022
If you have always wanted to act at the highest artistic level, then this three day acting intensive, live and in-person with The Master could be for you…even if you are a beginner, as long as you are deadly serious about acting.
Here’s the story:
I remember the exact moment when I wanted to become an actor who could create deep and profound work.
I was seventeen years old, and sitting on my mum and dad’s sofa at home watching Jack Nicholson in The Shining. To say I was blown away by his authenticity, emotional depth, believability and range of expression is an understatement. If you have ever seen the film, you will know what I mean.
I knew, even then, that I wasn’t watching run-of-the-mill acting. It was serious method acting of the highest standard.
It was at that moment that I decided to dedicate my life to the pursuit of acting excellence.
I know it might sound a bit trite, but it’s true, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you have had an epiphany moment like this too, many aspiring actors do.
Soon after watching Jack, I decided to study the approach he studied when he started out, which was Lee Strasberg’s Method. It’s fair to say that I immersed myself in this approach for decades and have taught hundreds of actors this technique since I started teaching back in 2006. Then in 2012…
I Saw A Production So Arresting
That It Transformed My Understanding Of Acting
I went to see the Moscow based Vakhtangov Theatre Company perform Uncle Vanya, and it was the best thing I have ever seen performed on a stage. They were using a heightened form of method acting called Fantastic Realism, which was invented by Eugene Vakhtangov back in the 1920s. It was like method acting.. but on steroids.
If you are looking for a modern-day reference then take a look at Joaquin Phoenix in Joker, Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York or Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada or Al Pacino in Scarface, and you will get the idea.
I started to research and study the work of the Vakhtangov, and as it turns out, he was a significant influence on Lee Strasberg, the creator of modern method acting. Vakhtagov was like the precursor to Strasberg. This also led me to the work of Nikolai Demidov (a colleague of Vakhantgov) whose work was entirely suppressed by the Russian government until recently.
The upshot is that I spent time in Russia studying all this, and I brought it back to the UK to teach my students…
The Results Of Which Have Been Outstanding!
I found that I could get students to quickly access their unconscious mind and completely enter into the mind of the character.
It also meant that I was no longer purely teaching Lee Strasberg’s approach, but a combination of Strasberg, Vakhtangov, Demidov and my own techniques. That’s why I have named it Timoney Method®. It’s a one of a kind method approach only taught at my studio.
The first step in the approach is to be able to deliver unconscious acting. I can’t tell you how important this is. It’s the foundation upon which all high-quality acting rests, and unfortunately, many actors don’t understand how to do this consistently and at will.
The heightened work I referred to earlier delivered by Joaquin Phoenix, Daniel Day-Lewis, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and the Vakhtangov Theatre Company is simply impossible without first being able to act at a subtle, confessionally sincere, unconscious level first.
Most actors don’t know how to do this. If they do manage to achieve it, it’s usually a fluke, and they don’t know how to recreate it.
Many actors think and perform at a conscious level. They think about what the character needs, how they will perform scenes and learn lines in the way they expect to play them.
This Is A Big Mistake And Leads To Cringe-Worthy Indicational Acting,
The Lowest Form Of Acting
But worry not, I have a way to avoid this.
The main focus of this three-day intensive is to teach you how to unconsciously enter the mind of the character and ONLY experience their thoughts and express yourself authentically.. as them.
It’s a lofty aim, but one that I am firmly committed to and believe we can achieve in the three days.
The main way we achieve this is through études. Études are scripts specifically written and designed to allow you to develop all the major skills required to act at the highest level. They are a full and comprehensive workout for the actor. The étude work is complemented with other vital Timoney Method exercises designed to enhance and build the overall capability of your acting instrument.
On Étude Xpress you will learn:
- A character creation technique that allows you to enter into the mind of the character
- How to Green Light your physical impulses, creating spontaneous reactions
- How to emboss your Soul Print onto the character
- A technique that allows you to give in to character creation rather than struggling to establish them
- A process to create complex multi-layered character thoughts
- How to establish dependable and consistent in the moment acting
- How to create an alert presence on stage or on set that allows you to see, hear and feel at a heightened level, making authentic response much easier
- A psychological way of using your breath that allows you to deepen your relationship with people and even inanimate objects
- A hundred-year-old Russian movement process called Plastiques enabling your mind, body and emotions to flow freely
- How to use Psychological Mask to create distinct and unique character physicality
- An immersive Character Creation Box that will allow you to access your unconscious mind and live in the character’s world
- How to access authentic emotion on demand through two different acting processes
- A process developed by the legendary creator of modern method acting, Lee Strasberg, to overcome stage fight and nerves
- A full body Psychological Gesture process that will become a shorthand way of accessing the character at a profound level
- How changing your clothes can have a profound effect on character transformation
- The key to overcoming two critical creative thresholds that can destroy your acting
The results I have been achieving from this way of working have been nothing short of amazing.
My teaching’s full power happens when I’m in the studio, live, watching students’ every move. I can see their whole body, watch their unconscious impulses and change how they are expressing themselves.
Training an actor is not only about getting someone to think differently, it’s also about getting them to express themselves physically. It’s a massive part of training an actor.
That next level is me analysing and dissecting your every thought and move, and coaching you to enter into the eyes of the character… in short, to transform.
That’s precisely what I do on Étude Xpress.
It lasts three days, there are only ten people on it, and we go deep into my approach – Timoney Method®.
But before you get too excited…
Let Me Tell You Who Is NOT Invited
This course is designed for serious beginners or those who have done some training before and want to retrain using this technique. It’s fine if you are at the start of your acting journey, but you need to be into acting in a big way.
This means it is NOT for:
- Flakes, wannabes and fame-hunters
- Those who know nothing about acting whatsoever (If you are a serious beginner you will have looked into acting, perhaps read a book or two on the subject or perhaps attended a class here or there, been to the theatre and have some sort of basic idea about acting).
- Those who like famous indicational actors (list available on request) who are as fake as a politician’s promise.
- Those who can’t name at least two method actors of note (I’ve mentioned more than that on this page, so if you can’t name two this course is not for you).
- Lazy people
- Complainers and moaners
- Passive-aggressive types
- Those who think they know-it-all
If any of the above resonates with you, then this is not for you. If, on the other hand, you don’t identify with any of the above and you are a ‘serious beginner’ or someone who wants to re-train in this technique, then I would invite you to apply.

Here Is What Students Of Étude Xpress Have To Say…
To describe the Etude Xpress week I only need one word: incomparable…Incomparable to any course I have ever taken.
And this because of the master himself: Brian Timoney. He is without any doubt the best acting teacher I have ever met and this because of several reasons.
First we have his extraordinary talent for perception. His sight literally sees everything; your thoughts during acting, even thougths you’re not aware of. No hide and seek, but really getting to the bottom of it. This is crucial in order to dive in your subconscious. You will really start to like letting go of all compulsive thoughts.
Another talent Brian has is the way of making you comfortable by being really down to earth. No shallow pep talks, but a truthful speech right to your heart. It makes you willing to give all you have and willing to let go of all mental obstacles. His feedback is so valuable and to the point, but in a way you fully understand and want to grow in your acting skills. He lifts you by making you see what you can achieve and how you can progress while following his method.
I’ll be back for sure. I hope in the Ultimate next year and hope to see you guys there too. Good luck!!
And thanks again to Brian and his lovely wife for all they share with us.”
If you have completed one of Brian’s Lockdown Acting Intensives and want to take your learning to the next level then you should apply for the Étude Xpress.
I had completed a number of Brian’s Lockdown Intensives before the opportunity arose to apply for the Étude Xpress. And quite honestly it was the best decision I made. Putting into practice some of the techniques learnt during the Zoom sessions, having others in the room and being able to interact with them, react to them, and experience them helped me solidify what I had been leaning and improve on it.
Things that may seem simple and foundational are not overlooked because they are as important as any other aspect. And Brian knows that. His knowledge is second to none and I would take every opportunity I could to learn more from him. Now I can’t wait to take my learning even further and take his Ultimate Acting Programme.”
Every course I have done with Brian ‘The Master ‘ Timoney, I have wanted to do again straight away, this one was no different. Doing etude express was such an exciting five days for me. After lockdown it was good to be with other actors in person and to be guided and taught by Brian – focusing on études.Études are one of my favourite acting exercises which teach you not to hide behind the idea of how a scene should be, but, rather, learn to trust and follow the actions of that scene.
From doing the etudes and with Brian’s guidance you learn the basic building blocks on which all of your future work will be built on. He guides you and teaches you in such a positive engaging way.
Practising etudes are an essential process of the method – and Brian has all the knowledge and experience to correct you and lead you down the right path to become a better actor.
Your spontaneity and emotional response is developed along with your readiness to surrender to the given circumstances
I learnt so much in a short space of time and left with a good foundation of knowledge on how to better myself as an artist – thanks to Brian.
I couldn’t recommend this course enough. If you are serious about acting you need to do this course- it will improve your acting ability, to be more natural, more believable and importantly, be more present.”
The Étude Xpress course was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. At the start of the 5 days I was terrified to get up and work but by the end of the week, or even the end of the first day, I was praying Brian would call me to go up. The course allowed me to build my confidence, my creativity and to nurture my imagination, all while being in the presence of like-minded people who I can now call friends. In doing the course I feel as though I’ve planted a ‘seed’ which was, and still is, fundamental in the growth of my acting journey thus far as well as in the future. Thank you Brian for making me fall back in love with acting and making me feel like the stage is my home.”
I’ve recently just spent 5 days with Brian doing the etude express course and I cannot believe how much I have improved within the 5 days – my confidence and my acting
Brian is a very intelligent tutor who knows how to get the best out of you even in a small period
Brian and Natalie are very nice people who make you feel welcome from day one.
I would highly recommend anyone who is serious about acting and working on their craft to get In touch with Brian you will be amazed how much you can improve in a short space of time
I am very grateful and privileged to have been given the opportunity to learn from Brian himself
Thank you both again and see you soon.”
I cannot wait for the next one and for many, many more after. This is a course that you will never regret.” Shane Jupp
I attended Brian’s Etude Xpress course in London for five days. The prospect of meeting a group of like-minded students keen on learning more about Method acting and the process called Etudes developed by Nikolai Demidov after such a long lockdown was more than a little exciting for me.
“We had already started to touch on the subject of Etudes and their benefits in training during Brian’s Lockdown acting intensive course ( which by the way are one of the prerequisites to complete before Brian will even consider you for one of his other courses, and then you have to go through an interview process before even being considered.) The online course is brilliant by the way and excellent value for money in my humble opinion.
Now I know what you might be thinking, that sounds like a lot of hassle just to get on an acting course! But you would be wrong, you see Brian is passionate about the art of acting and has no time for wannabes, lazy people, or time-wasters…. and neither should you if you are spending hard-earned money on an acting course with those kinds of people (anyway rant over, more about the course.)
Etudes teach the actor to take their in the moment perceptions and create a character or the embryo for a character and work it into a scene, you start with very short scenes and work up to bigger ones, eventual adding given circumstances etc. The results are instant and remarkable and interesting to perform and watch.
If the course was just to learn this extraordinary technique it would be worth it on it’s own, and although a lot of time was spent working on Etudes, it’s not the only things we learnt that week, oh no!
We also delved into Plastique’s, a psychophysical movement technique used by Eugene Vakhtangov, Psychological mask work, character box and gesture, voice work, sensory work…I could go on, but you get the picture.
Brian works on a personal level with every student and has a no-nonsense approach to his work that I really appreciate, he is extremely knowledgeable, you can tell he loves his job.
I would recommend this course to anyone who seriously interested in starting a path to acting professionally, or even to actors of any level looking to get to the next one.
I personally am looking forward to working with the master again later this year, hope to see some of you there.”
Étude express has been a very enriching experience packed full of many valuable learning points. It was really great to be re-introduced to many of the exercises which are covered in Lockdown Acting Intensive and have the opportunity to practice these in person with the Master close by to guide us. Being in the studio with other creative individuals also encouraged me to really let go of the outside world and commit myself to each exercise.
Within the studio there was a relaxed atmosphere and during the études I felt zero judgment or pressure to ‘perform’ creating a pretty unique environment compared to previous acting classes I have taken where there is expectation to always impress spectators and fellow actors by overacting. Working in this type of environment has left me feeling confident in my ability to act more authentically by trusting my impulses and letting emotions come naturally.
I am still amazed by the creativity that arose from each étude we did over the week, especially those that we did as a group. It was really fascinating how with just a few lines of text, and no given prior context, we were able to create a group of characters with a very interesting history (and hopefully future). This has really opened my eyes to the wonderful world of études and I am excited to explore them further.
This week has been a very fulfilling and important experience. Having a full week of just being allowed to be creative and express oneself is a very rare opportunity which has left me feeling really freed and joyful and I am very grateful for having had this experience.” Anna Middleton
